How to Borrow a Library Book on Your Kindle

For a printable Word Document, click HERE.

Have on hand:

Your Kindle e-reader and its USB cord (in case you won’t be using a wireless connection)

Your library barcode and four-digit PIN

Your Amazon.com email address and password

Prepare:

Turn on your computer

Turn on your Kindle

Turn on the wi-fi connection on the Kindle by selecting Menu and then Turn Wireless On

If you haven’t previously connected to a particular wireless network, do so by selecting Menu and then Settings. Go to Wi-Fi Settings and select View. Select a network, enter its password, and select Submit. You should see Wi-Fi in the upper right corner of your Kindle.

Computer:

Go to http://www.onlib.org/. This is the main library website.

Go to Catalog, and then Digital Catalog/Downloadable Items.

Search:

You can select to browse ebook fiction and ebook nonfiction in the left column. Within these, you can select specific genres to browse or search in. Once you have selected a genre (such as Mysteries or History), you can search for a specific title, author, topic or character. You can leave the search box blank and simply check Only show titles with copies available to browse titles you do not have to reserve.

To search through all ebooks, go to Advanced Search on the left side of the screen. In Format, select Kindle Book from the drop down menu. You may refine your search further (language, subject, etc.) You may even select Only show titles with copies available at the bottom. Select Search.

Choose:

Find a title you want. Choose the Kindle Book format.

If not immediately available, select Add to digital reserve list. You will be asked for your email address, so you can be contacted when the book becomes available. Confirm your choice. Once you are notified, via email, that the title has become available, you will have 48 hours to check it out.

If the title is immediately available, select Add to cart. You will see a screen describing your choice. If you change your mind, select Remove. If you want additional books, select Continue Browsing. If you are finished, select Proceed to Checkout.

You will see a screen confirming your selection, loan period, and other activity on your digital account. If you are satisfied, select Confirm Check Out.

You will see a Download screen, with the details of the loan. Select Get for Kindle.

You will be taken to the Amazon.com site. You will see a description of the book you are borrowing, as well as its loan expiration date. On the right side of the screen select Get library book. Sign in with your Amazon email address and password on the screen you are taken to.

On the next screen, choose the device or reading application you want your book delivered to and select Continue.

You will see a Thanks screen, informing you that your public library book has been delivered to the device or application you chose. If wireless was turned on, your book is now on the home page. If not, it will be the next time you turn wireless on. Or, you may transfer to your device via USB by clicking Download now and following the directions.

Go to the top of the Amazon page to Your account and sign out.

Go back to the OCPL page and logout of your library account.

If you are finished, select Menu and Turn Wireless Off on your Kindle to preserve battery life. You do not need to be connected in order to read your book.

Congratulations! You may now read your book anytime and anywhere.
