Your OCPL Library Card

Your OCPL library card can be used at any public library in Onondaga County.
At Maxwell Memorial Library, patrons need a valid library card in order to check out materials,
and to use the public computers for Internet access.
Library cards are offered free of charge.
To obtain a card, patrons must present identification with their name and current address.
We ask that children under twelve be accompanied by a parent or guardian to obtain a card,
and they must be able to write their first and last name.
Cardholders are responsible for use of the card, unless it has been reported lost or stolen to the
library.

When patrons have a PIN attached to their card, they have the capability of accessing the
OCPL website from any location to access reference databases, view their account, place
items on reserve, and renew items they have checked out.

The Library asks that you have your library card with you when you visit, or call, the library.
Beginning October 23, 2007, we'll no longer be accessing patrons' accounts using a Dynix
number, or name.

Loan Periods, Renewals, Fines & Lost Charges

With the exception of popular film titles, all materials are checked out for three weeks.
Patrons may have up to fifty items checked out on their card, with up to ten of those items
being media, i.e. VHS tapes and DVDs.

Items may be renewed twice providing there are no reserves, or other special restrictions on
them. Renewals may be done in person, by phone, or through the OCPL website.
Renewals cannot be done by e-mailing the library.

Overdue fines of 25¢ per day per item are assessed on items which are more than one day
late. The maximum overdue fine per item is $10. For lost or severely damaged items, the
account is charged with our replacement fee. Fines schedules may vary between suburban member
libraries.

Accounts with unpaid fines and/or other charges of $50, and above, will be turned over to
the library’s collection agency, Unique Management Services, Inc. This includes unpaid fines
on returned items. A service charge of $10 will be added to the account balance.
An overdue notice is mailed to your home address when an item is two weeks late. A final
notice is mailed two weeks after that.

Borrowing privileges, including using the Public Internet access computers, are suspended
when the balance on the card reaches $3.00, or more.

Reserves and Inter-Library Loans

Patrons may request items that are not available at the library be sent from another library in
the OCPL system be sent to Maxwell Library. Patrons can be put on a waiting list for
popular titles. When a requested item arrives, we ask that the item be picked up within three
library business days.
Items not available at any library in the county may be requested through a special Inter-
Library loan. This has to be done at the Main Desk.  When these items arrive, they may be
checked out for a maximum of two weeks. They must also be returned to the library at which
they were checked out.

Internet Policy at Maxwell Memorial Library

To use the library's public computers for internet, word processing, research or purposes other than
accessing the OCPL catalog, you must present a valid OCPL library card and have fines under $3.
For people without an OCPL library card, there is a 15-minute computer with access to the internet as
well as to the OCPL catalog but with no printing. No card is required to use the 15-minute computer,
and it is available on a first-come, first-served basis. A timer will automatically close your session after
15 minutes.

Maxwell Library's internet connection is an informational and educational tool. Our ISP is provided
free of charge by Time Warner Road Runner. The browser is the most current version of Internet
Explorer. The library has three computers dedicated to public internet access. In addition, one of the
public computers (#3) is set up with JAWS technology for reading the computer screen aloud to those
with vision impairment. You may check out a headset or bring your own. If you are not famililar with
this software, please make an appointment with the STARS department of the Central Library to learn
how to use it; for more information, call 435-1876. Public internet computer #3 also has the software
needed to check out digital audioboo
ks and download them directly to your MP3 player.

Free wi-fi access is available for people bringing their laptop computers to the library. No library card
is needed. Ask at the Main Desk for the current wi-fi password, and then make yourself comfortable
at a table, in the study, or in one of the big leather chairs. You may check out a lap desk, as well!
Wireless users agree to the library's policies for internet use.

Use of the Internet at the library is at your own risk. Not every website you visit will have a
privacy policy. Please note that not all sources on the Internet are current, accurate,
complete, legal, or philosophically acceptable to all citizens.

Since the Internet contains some information and services that may not be appropriate for
minors, parents and guardians of children should determine how they use the Internet. The
Library provides Internet access equally to all library users. Only parents and guardians, not
the staff, may restrict children from access to the Internet or other library materials.

Library patrons will avoid the following uses of the Library's technology resources:
  • Using the resources for financial gain
  • Using information without giving proper credit (plagiarism)
  • Using resources in any manner which violates library policy, federal, state, or local laws

Users are reminded that the Library's computers are located in public areas that are shared
with patrons and staff of all ages, backgrounds, and sensibilities. We ask that patrons respect
the rights of others when accessing potentially offensive information or images.

Web-based email can be accessed for sending and receiving mail. However, we do not offer access
to paid online services, such as AOL. Personal software programs or applications cannot be used on
our public computers, nor are they set up for games, chatrooms, or instant messaging. There are no
speakers, but users may bring their own headsets to plug-in for sound. In using email and word-
processing programs, be aware that you will not be able to save photos, documents, etc. to the
library computer. Please bring a disk or a USB drive (also called a flash, jump or thumb drive) to save
items for later use or to attach them to an email. The library may also have drives available for sale at
cost, but call ahead to make sure they are available.

Sign in at the Main Desk - a valid OCPL library card, or photo ID, is needed. Sessions are
for up to one hour per day on the Library's computers. Reservations may be made by phone.
Sessions may be scheduled on a walk-in basis, if a computer is available. Internet computer
time concludes fifteen minutes before closing.

The
library staff reserves the right to close any Internet session at its discretion.

Printing is $ .25 per page.
